When Charles Darwin left England on the HMS Beagle back in 1831, who could foresee that almost 200 years later his findings had real relevance for today’s business climate? Charles Darwin, commonly known as the Father of Evolution, spent 5 years sailing around the world. He later published his “On the Origin of Species…”, the foundation of evolutionary biology or “natural selection”.
You see it all around you now, in a microcosm. Businesses are quickly adapting or dying. And it is happening with incredible speed! They are electing to change with the new normal, or trying to wait it out for a return to the “old” way of doing things – way back in March!
We don’t think this is a waiting game; businesses that are surviving, and even thriving, are finding ways to adapt to their new reality. And some that have shut their doors were just waiting for a reason – any reason - to do so.
Some unofficial thoughts on who is really making it now:
- Groceries
- Pharmacies
- Hardware Stores
- Contractors
- Paint Stores
- Pool Companies
- Landscapers
- Anything home improvement
- Beach and Lake Vacation Communities
You get the idea…any business that has found a way to adapt and anyone involved in improving or adding to, someone’s home life, family life, or domicile.
It is the same with individuals; we develop the mindset of either hitting pause with our lives, or finding ways around current difficulties. This is true whether during a pandemic or not. Even if your health is compromised and you really need to avoid close contact, those who are thriving are staying active – mentally and physically - and are in touch with friends and loved ones.
To quote George Bernard Shaw, “Don’t Wait for the Right Opportunity: Create It.

or as my Mother always said, “God helps those who help themselves.”
